Seven Springs was a sweet place for a mixed crowd of beginners and experts. We had one newbie in the crowd that took a smooth & easy green run from the top before the end of her first morning. I wasn't comfortable with double blacks yet, so I opted to weave through a nice set of arbor trails.
At the time I was scared of blacks (for newbies, this is a good time to share-if someone says "this afternoon I'm doing a few blacks", please don't take offense. they are speaking of their intended runs-See The Newbie Manual). By the end of day one, I did a double-black-not well, but I did it.
For those who didn't wish to ski or ride the entire time, Seven Springs had snow tubing, bowling alley, video arcade, shopping, bars (We liked the Foggy Goggle) & a lot more.
Another impressor occurred when I missed my trail to return to the lodge for lunch. I took my board off (to hike up , then ride down another trail). As I ascended, a group of people on the lift above shouted, "Shaquita, Sha-Nay-Nay, Taquita," (insert random unique black girl name here), then "Black Ski!...Tired!" |
I laughed when they called me tired and yelled back "I missed my trail!" Just like a John Singleton movie, all arms flung up, "Awwwwwe!" is what I heard over deep breathing.
It was the first time I saw more than two black people on a mountain (including me). Black Ski was all over the place & it felt good.
Later, some of my co-workers stuttered, stared into my eye, and blinked alot, while commenting, "I've never seen so many (pause, whisper) black people skiing". I laughed out loud and agreed. Then I laughed more because they stared into my eyeballs as to get a reason. Some people from Black Ski, had HUGE logos on their jackets that read "Black Ski" on it, so it was no mystery why they were there or who they were. "Its a Black Ski Club!" I said with a smile and eyes just as surprised as theirs.
As more of us ski and ride, one day, it will not shock so much.
This resort is all around good. They allowed the trip leader to pre-place welcome baskets (lift tickets included) in our rooms. They had accommodations for singles as well as families, and it was located perfectly for DC & NY people to meetup. |
